The Trinity

My Mom is one of the best cooks I know!  She would make the trinity by the skillet full and use it in everything so I started doing the same thing.  I hate, hate, hate to waste food.  So tonight when I was going through my fridge I saw a bunch of celery that was about to go bad and a half full bag of baby carrots that may have expired 2 weeks ago but.....I'm still going to use them!  It was time to make a batch of the Trinity.  I've seen Emeril refer to the trinity as onion, celery and green bell pepper but ours is different.  It's BETTER!

1.  Slice the baby carrots.

2.  Chop the celery

3.  Chop the onion

4.  Add about 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet on medium heat.  Cook the carrots for about 5-8 minutes.  Add the celery, cook for about 5-8 minutes later.  Lastly, add the onion and cook for about 10 minutes.  You will see the celery turn bright green and carrots bright orange.  Continue cooking until the onions and celery are opaque.  Cooking at all stages does not require your complete attention.  I made mine while loading the dishwasher, putting up dinner, etc.  Just check on it every couple of minutes and give it a stir.  The Trinity will reduce by 1/3 - 1/2 when cooked.  When you start with this...

You will end up with this...

I freeze the Trinity in quart sized freezer bags and just break off a corner or two and throw it into spaghetti, stir fry, egg rolls, rice, soups, you name it!  We don't eat enough veggies and this is a great way to disguise them in something my family loves!

Lettuce Edge Hem: Onesie to T-shirt in 5 minutes

Hello my name is Sara and I'm a Gymboree addict!  However, I buy everything on sale, dirt cheap at the end of the season in the size I think my little ones will be next year.  So last year when I bought the 2T onesie I guess I wasn't thinking that my daughter was going to be potty trained and how inconvenient a onesie might be on a two year old.  When I saw this tutorial at Helping Little Hands I knew what I needed to do.  Now I did practice this technique on a stained onesie before I attempted to change my daughter's shirt.  It is very easy and once you get the hang of how your machine will feeds, the zig zag stitch you will be good to go.  Plus sewing on knit was new to me!

I started with this...

And ended up with this...

First, lay your onesie flat and line up the Fiskars Clear Acrylic Quilting Ruler with the bottom of the onesie, just above the top of the legs.  Using the Fiskars Rotary Cutter  simply trim the bottom part of the onesie.  By the way I use my Fiskars 3-Piece Quilting Set almost everyday!  I think I bought it at Joann's with a coupon or something but it really makes cutting fabrics for projects much easier and helps me to make my lines straighter, which I need a lot of help with!

I would trim as close as possible to the top of the legs on the onesie if you want the shirt to be a decent length.  I probably cut mine a bit too short and would prefer that my daughter's shirt be a little longer but lesson learned for next time.  Also, remember you can alway trim off more later, you can't add it back!

Next set your sewing machine to the zig zag stitch with the widest stitch and the shortest length.  Line the fabric up like this...

I pulled the knit t-shirt from the front and the back to stretch it as far as it would go in order to make the lettuce edge hem as ruffly (is that a word?) as I could get it.  Just be careful to not pull too far from the backside as to pull your stitch.

Sew all the way around and this is what your lettuce edge hem will look like...

So easy, literally took me like less than 10 minutes, even with the trial run on the old onesie, and oh so cute!

Thank you Helping Little Hands for the idea!

Tried the lettuce edge hem?  Tell me about it!

You must try the....Krustbuster!

Raise your hand if you have ever bought the Smuckers P, B and J sandwiches in the freezer section at your grocery store. [raise hand]. I totally love these sandwiches for my 2 year old the whole family!! Simply grab, thaw, and serve! They don't have crust and are neatly sealed all the way around so there isn't a chance of dripy jelly making its way to my daughter's shirt, if you know what I mean! Target occassionaly carries these with wheat bread, which is what I prefer. Soooooo my grandmother bought be neatest thing....the Krustbuster
. This $10 contraption is my new favorite toy {sad, i know}. I couldn't wait to go out and buy a new loaf of bread to try it!!! Here's my try... The only thing you need is peanut butter (creamy or chunky, your choice), jelly, FRESH bread (the moister the better seal) and the Krustbuster!!!

Spread your peanut butter on the inside of the two slices of bread about the size of the Krustbuster. You may ask why spread pb on both sides?? Well it keeps the jelly from soaking into the bread. {smile}

Next spread the jelly on one piece of bread but make sure it is well within the inside of the Krustbuster area--ensures a good seal.

Place the sandwhich on the Krustbuster, centering the PB&J area with the machine. Can I even call this a machine???

Press down until the krust starts to separate. Open the Krustbuster and Viola!

Now you have a perfect sandwhich, sealed and ready to be served or frozen for later.
Within minutes I made 4 sandwhiches! These are great, you control the ingrediants use Organic peanut butter, low sugar jelly or whatever you want.

I wrapped each sandwhich in wax paper and put them in a ziploc baggie, labeled it with the contents and date and I'm done.

I shared this at

I am not affiliated nor did I receive anything from the Krustbuster but love their product dearly!
